INTRODUCTION:

Hi Igniters For Change! The Igniting Change Radio Show on Tuesday, June 10th, 2025, from 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM Eastern Time, entitled “June 14th Stand Up To Tyranny! No Kings! July 17th Make More Good Trouble!”, will be live with Radio Show Co-Hosts and Transformative Justice Coalition (TJC) Co-Leaders Attorneys Barbara Arnwine, Esq. and Daryl Jones, Esq. and will feature special guests Leah Greenberg, Christine Wood, Joshua Raby, and Dr. Karen McRae.

The show will begin with guest Leah Greeberg, the co-founder and co-executive director of Indivisible. The No Kings Nationwide Day of Defiance is a protest movement organized by Indivisible and other pro-democracy groups in response to Donald Trump’s military parade on June 14, which coincides with Flag Day and the U.S. Army’s 250th birthday. The protests aim to reject authoritarianism and emphasize grassroots democracy, with events planned across the country.

How people can get involved: attend a local protest, with over 1,500 events planned across the U.S. and internationally; host a protest using the No Kings Host Toolkit to set up events in their communities; spread awareness by sharing information and recruiting others to join; engage in nonviolent action, emphasizing peaceful demonstrations and discouraging confrontation.

Anchor cities include New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Seattle, Austin, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Boston, and Minneapolis. The central anchor city will be Philadelphia, PA.

The protests are designed to counter Trump’s military parade, which critics argue is a display of dominance rather than a celebration of democracy. Trump’s military parade, scheduled for June 14, 2025 on his birthday in Washington, D.C., is estimated to cost between $30 million and $45 million. Earlier reports suggested that a similar parade proposed in 2018 could have cost up to $92 million, but that event was ultimately canceled. Organizers emphasize that real power comes from the people, not staged spectacles in Washington. The movement also seeks to reclaim patriotism, ensuring that symbols like the flag represent pluralistic democracy rather than authoritarian rule.

President Donald Trump ordered the deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles on June 8, 2025, despite objections from California Governor Gavin Newsom and LA Mayor Karen Bass. Trump justified the move by citing “lawlessness,” though Newsom called it an unlawful federal takeover and vowed to sue the administration (BBC, 2025). Historically, National Guard deployments have been used to protect civil rights, such as Abraham Lincoln’s use of federal troops during the Civil War, whereas Trump’s deployment is about suppressing civil rights protests (NBC Los Angeles, 2025).

On June 10, 2025, President Donald Trump ordered the deployment of an additional 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles, doubling the number of federalized personnel in the city. This decision followed his initial authorization of 2,000 troops on June 7, 2025, and the deployment of 700 active-duty Marines on June 9, 2025 (MSN, 2025).

California Governor Gavin Newsom criticized the move, stating that many of the first 2,000 troops were still sitting in federal buildings without orders. He further claimed that the troops had not been provided with food, water, or sleeping arrangements, calling the deployment reckless and disrespectful to service members (ABC News, 2025).

The protests in Los Angeles began in response to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids conducted across the city on June 7, 2025. Federal agents detained dozens of immigrants after summoning them to immigration offices under false pretenses, telling them they needed to update their work authorization documents or complete routine immigration paperwork, only to be detained upon arrival (CBS News, 2025). The misleading circumstances surrounding these summonses have been widely condemned by advocacy groups and legal experts (USA Today, 2025).

On June 8, 2025, demonstrations escalated as protesters gathered outside a federal detention center demanding the release of those arrested. The protests initially occupied a single block in downtown LA, primarily around Boyle Heights and the federal courthouse, before spreading to Paramount and Westlake (Fox 11 Los Angeles, 2025). The demonstrations later extended to freeways near downtown, where protesters blocked traffic (Fox News, 2025).

During a press conference on June 9, 2025, Trump threatened to arrest Newsom, claiming that his “primary crime is running for governor because he’s done such a bad job,” though he did not specify any legal basis for the claim (BBC, 2025).

Meanwhile, the Senate is advancing the “Big Beautiful Bill,” which includes expanded funding for ICE. Trump has repeatedly stated that ICE lacks sufficient funding, including remarks at a rally in Phoenix on May 22, 2025, where he said, “We need ICE to have the resources to do their job. Right now, they are stretched thin, and it’s unacceptable. We are going to give them the biggest budget increase in history—no more excuses” (KJZZ, 2025). He reiterated his stance during a Fox News interview on June 3, 2025, stating, “ICE is doing incredible work, but they need more funding. We are pushing Congress to approve billions more so they can ramp up operations and remove illegal criminals faster than ever before” (Fox News, 2025).

Trump also announced a ban on protesters wearing masks on June 5, 2025, arguing that they “have something to hide.” However, ICE agents continue to protect their identities, raising concerns about double standards in law enforcement (Fox LA, 2025).

The protests and federal response have raised due process concerns, as many immigrants were detained after being misled into appearing at immigration offices under false pretenses. Legal experts argue that this violates constitutional protections against unlawful detention (USA Today, 2025).

On June 9, 2025, the U.S. Northern Command confirmed the deployment of 700 active-duty Marines to Los Angeles to support National Guard troops amid escalating protests over ICE raids. The Marines, primarily from Twentynine Palms, were sent to protect federal personnel and buildings rather than engage directly with protesters (USA Today, 2025). This marks the first domestic deployment of Marines for civil unrest since the 1992 LA riots, sparking legal challenges from California Governor Gavin Newsom and Attorney General Rob Bonta, who argue that the federal government overstepped its authority (NBC News, 2025). Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth justified the deployment, stating it was necessary to defend federal agents amid rising threats (Stars and Stripes, 2025). However, critics warn that the move sets a dangerous precedent, with concerns over the use of military force against civilians (Global Nation Inquirer, 2025).

The protests have been largely peaceful, with thousands gathering near City Hall and federal buildings to demand an end to ICE operations. Demonstrators have engaged in singing, speeches, and nonviolent sit-ins (BBC, 2025). However, there have been isolated incidents of property damage, including the burning of Waymo driverless cars and graffiti on federal buildings such as the LAPD Headquarters and the U.S. Courthouse (CBS News, 2025). Reports indicate that some protesters threw objects at police, including chunks of concrete and fireworks, leading to law enforcement using tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse crowds (NBC News, 2025). Despite these incidents, the majority of demonstrations have remained peaceful, with organizers emphasizing nonviolent resistance (USA Today, 2025).

The show will then discuss not only what’s happening in Los Angeles but also TJC’s John Lewis Day of Action on July 17th, 2025; Good Trouble Lives On: Mobilize. Organize. Vote.

“Get in good trouble, necessary trouble, and help redeem the soul of America.” – Congressman John Lewis. Our freedoms are under attack. Our democracy is being pushed to the brink by white supremacist, oligarch, and anti-democracy forces that are actively undermining the right to vote for millions. We’ve been here before—and we know what to do – we know how to “Make Good Trouble”! On July 17, we honor the anniversary of the passing of civil rights icon John Lewis—not with ceremonies, but with action. Across the country, we will take to the streets and into communities to uplift his non-violent struggle for justice, voting rights, and dignity for all. This is more than a protest—this is a moral reckoning; a fight against voter suppression; a fight against Medicare and Medicaid and all other social safety net budget cuts and a fight to protect our Constitutional Freedoms, a continuation of Congressman Lewis’ legacy and a new front in the freedom struggle; this is a movement for Democracy!
