Our show on Tuesday, July 18th, 12:00-1:00 PM, Eastern Time, will feature the work being undertaken by the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, under the leadership of Rev. Jesse Louis Jackson, Sr., to protect our democracy from voter suppression and to unite Black Elected Officials throughout the United States around common policy objectives and challenges.
On July 15th at the Annual International Convention, “Protecting, Defending and Gaining: A More Perfect Union”, a Summitt was held of the many elected officials in attendance including members of Congress, mayors, city councillors, county officials, candidates for office and others. Rev. Jesse Jackson and Dorothy Brown convened this broad-ranging discussion to create more opportunities for Black elected officials to coordinate with each other across state lines. The PUSH Convention also featured strategies and discussions on fighting voter suppression and promoting electoral reform.
Our guests will include Dr. Julianne Malveaux, eminent economist, public intellectual and member of the PUSH Excel Board; Betty Magness, Illinois Political Director for Rainbow PUSH Coalition; and Dorothy Brown, Cook County Circuit Court Clerk. Guest Short bios and pictures are available at www.BarbaraArnwine.com.
The show will discuss many key questions including: How can Black elected officials be fully accountable to their constituents? What can be done to address the pressing issues of police accountability; quality educational opportunities; unemployment; entrepreneurship; affordable housing, gun violence and so many others? Why are Black elected officials judged more harshly than others? How do we protect our democracy from massive voter suppression? What can be done to advance electoral reforms to include more voters such as automatic voter registration? What are the goals of the new Anti-Voter Suppression Commission?
These and more questions will be explored during our show.
Be sure to listen live on Tuesday, July 18th, 12:00-1:00 PM, Eastern Time, in the DC Metro Region at WOL 1450 AM or on the Internet worldwide at www.BarbaraArnwine.com. You can call in with questions or comments at 800-450-7876. A podcast of the show will be available on Tuesday evening.
