Our show this Tuesday, December 19th, 2017 from 12:00 PM- 1:00 PM Eastern Time, will continue our December series exploring the critical racial, gender, economic, and environmental justice stories the Mainstream Media (MSM) missed or got terribly wrong! Justin Arnwine will co-host this show with Barbara Arnwine. Justin Arnwine is the Associate Producer of Igniting Change.
A story that has been widely but poorly covered is that of the GOP’s Tax Act which will be voted upon this week. Our show will will feature a discussion with Dr. William Spriggs, Howard University Professor of Economics and Chief Economist for the AfL-CIO about the GOP Tax Act and how it will impact communities of color.
We also will have guests on to discuss the MSM’s poor coverage of the Trump Administration’s loading of the courts with unqualified and ideological far right nominees. Everyone has been commenting on the viral video of Sen. Kennedy questioning federal district court nominee, Matthew Petersen, who is clueless to the basic principles of legal practice. Sadly, he is not unique.
Every year, the MSM fails to capture stories of major importance, especially those affecting People of Color, women, the LGBTQIA community, people with disabilities, policing reform, differential impact of economic and political policies, positive accomplishments made by People of Color, and issues of environmental justice. In its 4 years of operation, Igniting Change has used this month of December to not only examine the neglect by the MSM in its annual coverage, but to also highlight and promote issues and stories that should become headliners in the next year.

Besides its usual insensitivity to stories affecting marginalized communities in the United States, in 2017 the MSM was particularly engulfed by a constant, year-long binge of the Trump Administration, Trump-voters, and conservatives, including President Trump’s frequently bizarre tweets. Unfortunately, several trendlines and important political stories were ignored due to this fixation, and some of the coverage of the stories that weren’t missed has been subpar or unprofessional. Fortunately, social media was able to capture some of the important stories that the MSM missed.
Our guests will each highlight various stories and trends that the MSM missed. Throughout the month of December, we will have members of Congress and other prominent guests discuss a range of issues, including voter suppression, environmental justice, the progressive church movement, the Poor People’s Campaign, the Women’s March, sexual harassment in the restaurant industry and in domestic work, economic inequality, achievements made by People of Color in the economic, cultural, social justice and political realms, judicial nominations, cultural conflicts, the Libyan slave trade, the FBI’s designation of “Black Identity Extremists” as terrorists, the continuing failure of policing and law enforcement, the true story and aftermath of Charlottesville, and more.
You don’t want to miss this show!
