African American entrepreneurship has been steadily increasing even during the recession of 2007-2009. Indeed, over the last decade, African American women have made major advances in small business ownership. Still there remains a significant deficit in the profitability, size and vitality of Black businesses v White businesses. Issues of under capitalization, economic redlining, networking, racial discrimination, gender biases, planning and opportunities all are critical factors to be addressed in achieving successful business development.
In 2009, Debonette Wyatt started her entrepreneurship, creating Daisy’s Roses in 2011. Her Consulting Group works with entrepreneurs who are looking to either start or expand their current businesses. She also sponsors workshops such as I Am Building My Empire and is planning Break Bad 2018 to be held in March of 2018 in Baltimore, MD.
Yolanda Coly has built her career in promoting Minority and Women Owned Law Firms in the predominantly White Legal Sector. For a decade she was a Director for the National Association of Minority and Women Owned Law Firms, Inc., (NAMWOLF) securing over 200 Fortune 500 companies as partners and contributors and through an Inclusion Initiative generated over $1 Billion in expenditures on minority and women owned law firms.
