Our show on Tuesday, February 20 12-1:00 PM, EST, will feature a special one-on-one, in-studio interview with Benjamin “Ben” Todd Jealous who is a candidate for Governor of the State of Maryland. See Ben’s guest picture and bio at www.BarbaraArnwine.com.
Ben Jealous is best known as the charismatic and effective former president of the NAACP. He also has enjoyed a great career as a Rhodes Scholar, journalist, philanthropist, community organizer, educator and investor in startups for good. During his presidency at the NAACP, Ben Jealous proved to be a bold leader. Working with the legendary Julian Bond he led the NAACP to take a leadership role in advocating for Dreamers and LGBTQIA rights. These efforts helped to reach many voters, including African American voters, resulting in the passage of significant Ballot initiatives by Maryland voters. He also placed enormous energy in fighting to repeal the death penalty in Maryland. Under his direction the NAACP built a strong financial base and expanded its membership, especially among youth and millennials.
Although, Republican Governor Larry Hogan of Maryland has a 60% approval rating according to polls, nevertheless Democratic voters, who constitute the majority in Maryland, have indicated an unwillingness to vote for him in future elections. Indeed according to current polling data Governor Hogan currently lacks the 50% margin of likely voters necessary to win reelection. This means that the upcoming June Democratic primary might be decisive as to who will be the next governor of Maryland.
Our show will explore several questions with Ben Jealous including: Why is he running for Governor? What is his overall vision for Maryland; What are his priorities for building jobs and business development?; What is his position on money bail reform and other criminal justice reforms?; How to improve funding for education?; Medicare for All?; What are his plans for addressing the costs of higher education?; How should Maryland respond to the Trump Administration’s immigration priorities?; Can Maryland address issues of homeownership for people of color following the foreclosure crisis?; Is equal funding possible for Maryland counties?; What should be done to improve transportation in the State?; Given threats to the Chesapeake Bay, what are his environmental objectives; How would he govern?; and many more questions.
