Our show this Tuesday, December 12th, 2017 from 12:00 PM- 1:00 PM Eastern Time, will continue our December series exploring the critical racial, gender, economic, and environmental justice stories the Mainstream Media (MSM) missed or got terribly wrong! Justin Arnwine will co-host this show with Barbara Arnwine. Justin Arnwine is the Associate Producer of Igniting Change.
We will start Tuesday’s show with a story the MSM has missed from this weekend of Michigan Governor Snyder’s announcement that he will not hold a special election to fill the Michigan 14th District US Congressional seat vacancy created by the retirement of Congressman John Conyers. This decision will effectively disenfranchise the 706,000 people residing in this district from representation in the U.S. House for 11 months. We will speak with Rev. Dr. JoAnn Watson, Distinguished Alumnus of the University of Michigan, associate Pastor of West Side Unity Church and Host of the Radio/TV show, “Wake Up Detroit.”
In addition, Tuesday is the special Senatorial election in Alabama. We will have direct reports from on-the-ground organizers about turnout, voter experiences, and other issues of interest for this major contest. Many, many feel the the media has misrepresented the issues affecting the African-American vote in Alabama. We wil try to examine and correct that report.
The final part of the show will feature a discussion with Dr. William Spriggs, Howard University Professor of Economics and Chief Economist for the AfL-CIO about the GOP Tax Act and how it will impact communities of color.
Every year, the MSM fails to capture stories of major importance, especially those affecting People of Color, women, the LGBTQIA community, people with disabilities, policing reform, differential impact of economic and political policies, positive accomplishments made by People of Color, and issues of environmental justice. In its 4 years of operation, Igniting Change has used this month of December to not only examine the neglect by the MSM in its annual coverage, but to also highlight and promote issues and stories that should become headliners in the next year.
Additional our expert guests for this show include: Sharon Hill, Community Advocate, Human Relations Strategist and top Political Organizer in the State of Georgia; and, Miss Georgia and Founder of the Student Jolly Awareness Program, Triana James, and Dr. William Spriggs. See guest pictures and bios at www.BarbaraArnwine.com.
Besides its usual insensitivity to stories affecting marginalized communities in the United States, in 2017 the MSM was particularly engulfed by a constant, year-long binge of the Trump Administration, Trump-voters, and conservatives, including President Trump’s frequently bizarre tweets. Unfortunately, several trendlines and important political stories were ignored due to this fixation, and some of the coverage of the stories that weren’t missed has been subpar or unprofessional. Fortunately, social media was able to capture some of the important stories that the MSM missed.
Our guests will each highlight various stories and trends that the MSM missed. Throughout the month of December, we will have members of Congress and other prominent guests discuss a range of issues, including voter suppression, environmental justice, the progressive church movement, the Poor People’s Campaign, the Women’s March, sexual harassment in the restaurant industry and in domestic work, economic inequality, achievements made by People of Color in the economic, cultural, social justice and political realms, judicial nominations, cultural conflicts, the Libyan slave trade, the FBI’s designation of “Black Identity Extremists” as terrorists, the continuing failure of policing and law enforcement, the true story and aftermath of Charlottesville, and more.
