In an unfortunate and divisive move, on Tuesday, April 17, President Trump signed an executive order requiring the Housing and Urban Development, the Department of Agriculture and several other agencies to develop policies and programs to impose work requirements for recipients of Welfare which was defined as including public assistance programs. Using Reagan era rhetoric, Trump alleged that this order was necessary to decrease dependency on the government. He also embraced drug testing requirements. Yet as critics quickly pointed out, work requirements is about stereotyping the poor as many recipients of “food stamps” and Medicaid are the working poor. And all studies of drug testing have shown that very few recipients use drugs.
Later that week, the House Agriculture Committee, released a draft farm bill which would slash $350 million from the budget by eliminating six programs which provide support for “regional food economies and rural conservation and renewable energy efforts.”
I show will discuss the impact of the new executive order and this proposed draft Farm Bill. Questions to be examined include: How to educate the American public to not fall for the stereotypes of welfare dependency?; What is wrong with work requirements?; What has been learned from existing work requirements?; Which programs are better to help the working poor reach greater self-sufficiency?; Why are the cuts to the Farm Bill problematic?; How can our listeners help to oppose these devastating measures.
